Year 13 A level Physics trip, led by Dr. Hassan and Ms. Ahlin provided students with a unique opportunity to visit both the picturesque town of Annecy, France, and the world-renowned CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.
In Annecy, students explored the beautiful Lake Annecy and the historic Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, immersing themselves in France’s cultural and architectural history.
The highlight of our journey was undoubtedly the visit to CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory in the world and home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built. During a guided tour, students were introduced to CERN's monumental role in advancing our understanding of fundamental physics. They learned about CERN's origins and the collaborative nature of its research, which involves scientists from around the world.
Our guide walked us through the types of experiments that are conducted at CERN, from exploring the fundamental particles that make up matter to investigating the conditions of the early universe. Students were fascinated to learn about the discovery of the Higgs boson and other groundbreaking findings, and they gained insights into how CERN's cutting-edge research may unlock new realms of understanding about the universe, such as dark matter, antimatter, and the forces that govern particle interactions.
The tour also covered some of CERN’s other initiatives, like their ongoing work with particle detectors and data analysis, which contribute to advancements in both theoretical physics and practical applications, including medical imaging and data science. Students even saw some of the high-tech equipment up close, providing them with an unforgettable perspective on how advanced technology supports world-changing research.
In addition to the visit to CERN, students also had time to explore the vibrant city of Geneva, where they experienced the cultural and scientific significance of this international city.
A big thank you to the Tallow Chandler's Company for making this amazing trip happen.
