The 25th anniversary of Refugee Week - what does compassion look like in action?

13th Jun 2023

For Refugee Week's 25th anniversary we are invited to celebrate what compassion looks like in action.

Here's what GCA will be doing this year:

Cyclists are taking part in the The Bike Project' challenge "Refugee Routes".

Staff, students and family members are joining forces to collectively cycle the same number of miles as a real refugee’s journey to safety. We have chosen Syria to Turkey - 918 miles. As at at June 13 we are three quarters of the way there and will probably need to choose an additional route.

On 25 June, we'll cycle from school to Trent Park for a picnic.

We are donating unused bikes to be refurbished for refugees.

Activities from 19 June:

19th - sponsored stationary bike rides

20th - sponsored skipping

21st - Year 7 students will post messages of support for refugees on the tree of compassion

22nd - A showing of 'The Swimmers' - based on the real-life story of Syrian sisters who fled their country. Sara and Yusra Mardini became refugees, took a boat to Europe, and one of them, Yusra, reached the Olympics afterwards.

23rd - A showcase debate on whether the UN should widen the definition of refugee.
