From Newsroom to Front Page: GCA Students visit the Guardian!

4th Feb 2025

30 Year 9 students attended a day-long journalism workshop ('Behind the Headlines') at the Guardian newspaper. They learned from Mena, the brilliant Education Officer at the Guardian, about all the jobs and processes involved in producing a newspaper. They were then supported to put those steps into practice. In a fast-paced, time-tight programme they worked in pairs to research, fact-check and write two articles on current news. After lunch (in the very glamorous surroundings of the staff restaurant) they went on to edit their stories, add impactful pictures, devise captions and headlines until, finally, their 'front pages' were sent off to be printed. Each student got a copy, as did Mr Rathmell, who is planning an amazing display in the English corridor. Staff commented on the impeccable behaviour, excellent engagement and focus of the students, who were a credit to GCA.
