Huge cheers for our Speak Out finalists - Manuela and Hossa

7th Feb 2024

Ms Bullock tells the story:

On February 6, I took Hossa and Manuela in Year 10 to the Haringey Regional Final of the Speak Out Competition at Fortismere School.

There were 19 contestants from schools across Haringey, performing persuasive speeches on a range of topics from sexual harassment to being a nerd.

Hossa's speech was titled: 'AI: friend or enemy?'

Manuela's speech was titled: 'The struggle to belong'

The standard was incredibly high and the atmosphere really buzzing; it was a pleasure to watch so many young people talk on subjects they felt strongly about. The girls absolutely held their own and performed confidently and passionately, despite the nerves of performing on a proper stage under lights and with a microphone!

The judges included a trainee barrister and a BBC foreign correspondent. The mayor of Haringey was also in attendance.

Although it is (of course) about the taking part, I am also INCREDIBLY happy to say that (drum roll...) Manuela was judged 3RD PLACE so will go through to the London semi-finals in June!!! As part of this, she will also be given opportunities organised by the Jack Petchey Foundation such as a visit to the Houses of Parliament and Cambridge University.

Please congratulate both when you see them! My voice is hoarse today from all the whooping...
